Marriage has been valued highly for centuries. Yet, rate of divorce has been increasing rapidly. It disrupts the smooth running of the society and causes many problems to the spouses, children of the divorced and the society at large. Therefore, in this research, an attempt has been made to find out the factors affecting divorce among the Kandyans in Sri Lanka. To achieve this aim, a study of divorce under the Kandyan Ordinance in Ibbagamuwa Divisional Secretary’s Division from 1995 to 1999 has been done. These findings have been compared with the west. Moreover, this book provides a deep study of the Kandyan Law of Marriage and Divorce and the teachings of Theravada Buddhism on marriage, family life and divorce.
