A reader who holds Music in Nigerian Society holds in his hands three provinces of music that operate and intermingle within Nigeria. In our traditional society and indeed to amny an African mind, these three provinces – Ethnomusicology, Music Education and Popular Music – are one, for none can exist without the other. It is only stratification imposed by the mind and the force of Western music scholarship that has compelled some people to see the same thing as three objects.
