The need to have a book of readings on the state of foreign languages in Nigeria may sound only narrowly convincing until we have attempted to examine the whole question from the point of view of its history, its development and its implication for educational and cultural growth. It is this attempt that lays bare the wisdom behind the type of themes that a book of this type may attract. This is what the book has attempted to do. It is also from this book that we can hope to show the broad strokes that characterize Nigeria’s foreign language profile. This book is drawn from the experience and commitment of a good number of scholars from all over the country, the common bond being their sustained interest in the fate of foreign languages in this country.
