This is a long-awaited illustrated ethnography recording the traditions and culture of indigenous Formosan people, the Bunun who live in the highest-mountainous areas of Taiwan. Mr. SEGAWA Kohkichi drew up this research project in 1930s, when he repeatedly visited the Bunun at scattered habitations deep in the mountains. Since 1980s, his successor Dr. YUASA Hiroshi, the author of this book, has continued the research. Thus, Mr. SEGAWAs effort and dedication finally come to see the light of day for publication. Many of the photographs are highly valuable as research materials which tell us of customs, livelihood and crops of the Bunun that have been lost.
