Machiya are a traditional Japanese residential architectural style that can also be renovated to incorporate fine modern architectural interiors. Whether old or newly renovated, Machiya exist in harmony with nature. Today, however, the number of Machiya in Kyoto continues to decrease. This book introduces the reality of the Machiya situation in Kyoto today together with the wide-ranging cooperative efforts being made by public administrative companies and Kyoto citizens to keep Machiya culture alive.
