Product Description

This work seeks to examine the evolution of British Paramountcy in the Princely State of Jaipur from 1818, when the State came under British protection, to 1905, came under British protection, to 1905, when the process reached its culmination. The roots of British Paramountcy could be perceived during the period of East India Company’s rule, but it was under the Crown that the paramountcy assumed wide dimensions in response to the growing requirements of the imperial Government. In the post-1858 period there was an ever-increasing intervention of the British Government in the internal affairs of the state even in violation of the treaty of 1818. The vast and various fields in which such an intervention was exercised were the matters of succession, border disputes between jaipur and other States, Salt, coinage, opium-trade, railways, roads, post and telegraph, military establishment in the State and British impact in every department of administration. All these matters have been discussed comprehensively and critically in various chapters. The concluding chapter sums up findngs in retrospect. The Various facets of British paramountcy in the aforesaid matters have been analysed and examined in the context of general policy adopted by the British statesmen towards the Princely States of India as a whole; at the same time, peculiarities in respect of Jaipur state have been highlighted. The work is based largely on unpublished primary sources, notably Proceedings of the Government of India, Foreign Department and Jaipur Agency / Residency Record, available in the National Archives of India, New Delhi – Sources which have remained more or less untapped hitherto.
