The wordlist aims to help non-Afrikaans speaking students function better and feel more at home in an Afrikaans environment. In 2009, the Buro van die Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal was approached by the Friends of Afrikaans to compile a list with 1 000 most useful Afrikaans words a student would need to get along on a predominant Afrikaans campus. Each word is translated into English and the use thereof illustrated by a full sentence. Some information that a tourist may find helpful was added to this wordlist as an extra benefit to international students. Text boxes are spread throughout the text in an attempt to convey language cultural information. The book also contains a section with phrases for various communication situations, such as ways to greet in Afrikaans, the days of the week, the months of the year etc.. For easy reference, an English-Afrikaans index had been included at the back of the book.
