This book is a survey of Nepali art in the collection of one of the leading museums of the world MMA, New York. It encompasses the study of the Newar art heritage of the Kathmandu Valley dating from the sixth century to the early twentieth century. The present work is the survey of Art conducted by the author in the Spring of 1998. The term lost is used in this survey in a symbolic sense to create understanding in terms of the eyes of the creator of the object and the intrinsic value attached to it. In our belief, whether or not the item is in the possession of a foreign museum, in the native understanding of Nepal, it is actually lost from its original home, losing its cultural, religions and intrinsic values.
