Completed in June 1937, its giant yellow dome measuring 26 meters high, it easily dominated the cityscape of Phnom Penh while its four arms gracefully extended into the surrounding space. Ranking at the time among the largest domes in the world, the Central Market is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful buildings built by the French during the protectorate. After more than 70 years of loyal service, the Municipality of Phnom Penh, in collaboration with the French Development Agency decided at the turn of the millennium to offer it a new lease of life by renovating both the interior and exterior of the building. This book does not relate only the stories of its construction, renovation and current operation, but also reflects by words and images, the human presence behind the scenes and behind the stalls, people who every day give life to the market, busy under the dome and wings.
