This book is a cultural and social history of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95. It focuses on the ways in which Japan’s first modern war shaped the emerging national consciousness of the Japanese people through a variety of modern institutions and mass media, ranging from the popular press, theater, and song to veteran’s relief funds, memorial services for the war dead, and the construction of public monuments.
