To this day plantations play an important role in the economy of many countries in the world. However international finance crisis, basic changes in the economic and politics during the last few decades have relatively reshaped the trade relationship between the consumers and producers. This has influenced many implications of the plantation industry. This study aims to facilitate an initial understanding of the situation and issues confronting tea plantation workers in Sri Lanka. On the basis of the information, the study explores the status of the health & education, freedom from poverty, living wage, conditions of employment, struggle of plantation women workers and the role of the stakeholders in the development of the plantation community. There is no doubt that the plantation sector will retain its importance in the economy in the future as well, which will largely depend on the sustenance of the workers. We believe that the challenges of the plantation people can be effectively overcome, and a mechanism developed.
