Magical Times in Ceylon/Sri Lanka is titled thus because it spans the time and events associated with a charming and enchanted country searching for its place in the world after having been ruled by colonial powers for centuries. It was like a 20-year old still using the political, legal and administrative structures inherited from the parent of an alien culture, and therefore simultaneously loving and hating those values, but very much unable to develop its own systems.
