A group of graphic design students and a group of Kayamandi high school learners embarked on a project of mapping Kayamandi, a township in Stellenbosch. The mapping was not strictly geographic, and student-learner partners were encouraged to explore various facets of social, personal, environmental, historical and cultural life in their documentation of the area. The process of collaboration between young people from radically different life-worlds, who (often) hold deeply-ingrained suspicions and preconceptions about one another, is manifest in the product of that interaction.
