"I didn't mind that they called it suicide, because she was a nice girl. He, on the other hand, was not a nice boy, and when I realised that I'd have to be the one to find him, I didn't have much trouble taking hold of the clammy wrist to check his pulse, and then calling the police. His face looked much the same dead as alive." Close to home is a suspenseful telling of mysterious happenings that take place among a circle of friends. Through multiple narrations, the story unfolds in the thoughts and actions of the characters. When this circle of friends start off their university career as what seems to be ordinary and free from trouble, one of their classmates is found dead. The group becomes divided when debate arises around the cause of death. "The day he died was a strange, dark day, with an air of finality about it. It's easy to say afterwards that you knew something was going to happen, that you predicted it and in this way had some special power over it, but when I looked out that afternoon at Clarence and his brother drinking whisky in the rain by the swimming pool that no-one ever used, I had a distinct feeling that something would be different by that evening." While some believe it to be suicide, others believe it to be murder and even begin to speculate who might be responsible for what has just taken place. Suspicions among the girls escalate and the rifts among them continue to deepen. Two more deaths occur close to the girls forcing them to consider with more urgency the damages that threaten their lives and the lives of those close to them.
