From the time the British East India Company was granted a Royal Charter to trade in the Malay states, to the establishment of the first magistrate in Penang in 1801, we are taken on a journey of discovery and evolution, before emerging at the foot of the Palace of Justice, the official seat of the Malaysian Judiciary today. This record is a testimony of the pivotal events and key roles played by luminaries past and present, drawn from a myriad of backgrounds and cultures to mould this unique judicial system. Sourced from his private collection of photographs, mementos and conversations with those who experienced the events firsthand, this record is the author’s labour of love and passion to retell the story of the Malaysian Judiciary. The first edition of the book was published in 1994 and covered the period from 1786 to 1993, with the second edition published in 2002 extending the record to 2001. In this third edition, the author has revisited all chapters of the book, adding fresh content from further research, additional images, more stories that have never before been published, including several light-hearted recollections of judicial life, as well as several new chapters covering the turbulent times that befell the judiciary before it emerged renewed and strengthened today
