This book is the outcome of discussions that took place at a meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in February 2016. The meeting, with the theme "ASEAN's Next 50 Years: ASEAN's Future in a Rapidly Changing World", gathered some 50 senior, influential and upcoming thought leaders from ASEAN Member States and Dialogue Partner countries to cast a long view on ASEAN into the next 50 years. Throughout the book, several important themes emerge for the future. These include the changing roles of superpowers and their impact on Southeast Asia; the amplified prospect of traditional and non-traditional security threats in the region; the implications of trade protectionism and disruptive technology on a region that thrives on economic cooperation; the sustainability of the region's development; frustration at ASEAN's inability to evolve beyond its traditional principles at a satisfactory pace; and a heightening level of social consciousness warranting wider people participation in the greater ASEAN project. Featuring over 30 authors, this publication consists of 10 chapters.
