Product Description

When Yongyudh Ploysongsang left his home in Thailand and arrived in war-torn China at the end of the Second World War, before the resumption of the Chinese Civil War, his prospects looked bleak as did the future of China. He went from an urban middle-class upbringing to eking out a life as a farmer in rural China. Forced to immigrate to carry on the family lineage, he endured what ended up to be five difficult years in mainland China, which culminated in a harrowing escape from the victorious Communists. After resettling in Thailand, his hard-work and the sacrifices of his family led him to the pinnacle of his career as an academic at an American medical school and later as a prominent physician in his homeland. While this autobiography focuses on the life of one third culture individual, it does so with ample cultural and historical context to keep the interest of a wider audience of readers. The author also discusses his ideas on what contributed to his successes and failures in each of the three countries - three worlds - that he calls home.
