Dr. T.Publis Silva’s Mahasupavansaya, a chronicle recording of the evolution and food culture of the Sri Lankan society, can be interpreted as an encyclopedia of food and cuisine of Sri Lanka.The book also explores the changes that took place in the food culture of Sri Lanka from the beginning of its literary history, mostly from the arrival of the Prince Vijaya, to the present with the aid of written records such as Mahavansa, Deepavansa, Saddarma Rathnavaliya and Sanskrit Kavya besides similarly, stone inscriptions and archaeological details are used to analyze the changes in the food culture of the country. The Mahasupavansaya is not written in the form of a traditional recipe book. Having included information ranging from evolution of types of food since the stone ages to 1815 when the Sinhala Kingdom was conquered by the British, the provincial variation that can be seen, to the types of food consumed by different communities.
