If a welfare state is the goal, then ethical policy is a necessary condition for its success. Ethics in public policy making and conduct of business has not gained centre space in recent times but has been a part of formal conduct of state affairs in the ancient era as well. To trace this interaction of public policy and ethics within in the fabric of Indian classical thought and to conclude its bespoke relevance in current times, this work traces the development of philosophical concepts from Mahabharata to classically inspired Gandhian thought.
