When the Admiralty sends Cook to observe the transit of Venus he is also told to find new territories for Britain and to take steps secretly to get in ahead of the French. Never have Cook’s journals and charts been subjected to such unbiased, forensic examination. The doubts, puzzles and queries raised by J.C.
