The book that you are holding is a very precious document, placed in the supplementary collection’s volume II that first published regarding the case of patriotic Phan Boi Chau (1867 - 1940). The book composed of 612 pages (including 1.997 questions and answers) is an interrogation dossier established by the French colonial administration in Vietnam in the year of 1925. The copy of this dossier was provided by Mrs. Nguyen Phuong Ngoc (France). The careful and serious Vietnamese translation was conducted by Mr. Dao Hung and Mr. Dang Cong Toai. The Interrogation’s Dossier shown that many of the members of the Appeals Board of the French colonial administration in Vietnam each after another interrogated Phan Boi Chau, offering evidence against him provided by the Secret Intelligence Service and the Indochinese Governorate. All of this suggested that the French secret police painstakingly gathered information from many sources in order to force Phan to plead guilty. However, with the sharp intelligence and ability to judge, to process information, patriotic strong-willed Confucianist scholar Phan Boi Chau recognized the trap in the questions. He provided the French colonial Appeals Board with the “misstatements, misrepresentations” in order to protect his comrades as well as the great revolutionary cause, to preserve the fighting power and the willpower of the nation. The life of Phan Boi Chau, a patriotic strong-willed Confucianist scholar, was reinterpreted in the French colonial Interrogation’s Dossier as a “penitentiary”, but it was the torch that shed more light on a lots of opened places in the life of Phan Boi Chau.
