The Tran dynasty replaced the Later Ly dynasty (1009–1225), which started the process of Vietnamese expansion south from the Red river region at the expense of the Indianized kingdom of Champa. Shortly thereafter, Indochina was invaded by a Mongol army under the great conqueror Kublai Khan. The Tran dynastic capital at Hanoi was sacked in 1257, but the Tran rulers repulsed this first Mongol invasion; and a united Vietnam-Champa effort repelled second and third Mongol invasions in 1284 and 1287. Tran Hung Dao, original name Tran Quoc Tuan, also called Hung Dao Vuong, (born 1229 – 1300), figure of almost legendary proportions in Vietnamese history, a brilliant military strategist who defeated two Mongol invasions and became a cultural hero among modern Vietnamese. Tran Hung Dao was one of the first great Vietnamese military strategists. His use of guerrilla warfare to harass and eventually defeat a more powerful enemy provided a model for communist guerrilla warfare in the 20th century. His mobilization of the entire Vietnamese population in the cause of national resistance to foreign invasion similarly inspired the North Vietnamese during the Indochina Wars (1946–75). His proclamation calling for national unity, along with a textbook he wrote on military strategy, became classics of Vietnamese literature. Tran Hung Dao is still an object of worship in rural areas of Vietnam, with many temples dedicated to him. This dramatic historical period has been restored by Phan Ke Binh (1875 – 1921) and Le Van Phuc (? - ?), with their heart devoted to the history of the nation, fully reproduced in the novel titled Hung Dao Vuong. They chose the writing-style of chapters appealing but still clinging closely to historical data to help readers better understand each person who participated in the events of national heroism at that time. The work as a story is told in a casual way, calm, not put on fiction, rhetoric, but each hero is still prominent in its personality & talent. The novel titled Hung Dao Vuong was first published in 1912 and is one of the rare & unique books about Vietnam's history which stuffed material that is told in a lively voice & tone of chapters’ novel. Details about the life of Monsignor Tran Hung Dao and the development of the war against the Mongol invasion are reproduced honestly but equally attractive. In 2017, the book reprinted with new illustrations by painter Pham Ngoc Tan.
