The book was written by Isabelle Muller (France), a foreign woman who wrote about her Vietnam biological mother named Dau Thi Cuc (a.k.a Loan, born in 1929). Isabelle Muller, who brought two European-Asian bloodlines (Vietnamese mother, French father), from childhood she cherished a wish to write a books about her special mother. At the age of 15, Isabelle Muller began to write down carefully notes through the mother's narrative, and 30 years later, Isabelle Muller started to pen and finish the work in just two years. Ms. Loan's life has gone through a lot of bitterness due to the gender prejudice of the Oriental Confucianism in the past. She was not able to go to school, she had to make her living, drifting from Ha Tinh to Nam Dinh, Hanoi, Bac Ninh and Hai Phong to earn a living. She was almost sold to the brothel, but wherever she went she tried honestly to earn a living. The book reached the top 5 finalists in the Kindle Storyteller Award in 2015 and ranked the best seller on Amazon (Germany). The original German translation was translated into Vietnamese by Doctor of Literature Truong Hong Quang who is currently working in Berlin (Germany).
