Set against the first hundred years of British colonial rule, this volume narrates Hong Kong's urban development and modern Sino-Hong Kong relations through accounts of prominent Chinese and foreign individuals visiting or passing through Hong Kong between 1841 and 1941. They visited Hong Kong for different purposes: treaty negotiations, official visits, research and study, or looking for business opportunities, for example. Others came for personal reasons, such as escaping from adversity, recuperating from illness, travelling, performing, or even to earn a living.
