Product Description

1. Johor (Malaysia) – Politics and government 2. Johor (Malaysia) – Social conditions. 3. Johor (Malaysia) – Economics conditions. The writer traces the creation and evolution of the culture, the spirit of cooperation and understanding of the people of Johor since its founding in the early 16th century, and leading to the present state of holistic development and modernity. The book showcases the leadership and vision of its rulers and their significant role in creating a democratic government and a just society. A distinct feature of its history is that although Johor experienced three major paradigm shifts in ownership, there were neither major political conflicts nor economic and commercial upheaval. Prosperity and peaceful existence was the order of the day. Sultan Abu Bakar through internal and administrative reforms advocated the spirit of cooperation, unity and concord of his people, which proven to be vital in establishing a bastion of defence protecting his state from the British forward movement for 30 consecutive years. His son Ibrahim consolidated it by initiating the concept of ""Bangsa Johor"" (literally, a Johor race) to enhance the spirit of brotherhood, tolerance and cooperation among the eclectic mix of ethnicity necessary for sustainable development. In both instances, the people were justly treated and no person or community was marginalized. This book highlights some of the major innovations including the promulgation of the state constitution, heraldry and court traditions introduced by Sultan Abu Bakar that placed Johor in the foremost position vis-a-vis the other Malay states. The constitution is the manifestation of Abu Bakar's will of retaining ownership of the state by his descendants, and initiated a democratic constitutional monarchy. The writer has also included brief notes on some luminaries that developed Johor, some notable landmarks of Johor such as the causeway as the conduit of development with international economies, the iconic one and only Johor Military Forces, palaces and institutional buildings to add to the tapestry of Johor's rich heritage. The people holds in high esteem and exhibit loyalty to the Sultanate for their leadership qualities, their benevolence, compassion, vision and wisdom in bringing development and preserving racial and religious harmony. The rulers have successfully created an environment of peace and prosperity for ""Bangsa Johor"" to live harmoniously in an abode of dignity.
