Temuan World of Words offers tantalising glimpses into the world of one of the indigenous Orang Asli communities of Peninsular Malaysia. The Temuan negotiate a way of life that sits uneasily in spaces which have not yet been fully co-opted into the service of a cash-based economy– spaces which still carry echoes of the subsistence-farming and hunter-gatherer lifestyle of their forebears. This word-list bears eloquent witness to the material culture of the Temuan, their beliefs and value systems and their natural environment, as well as the tensions inherent in their life at the fringes of mainstream Malaysian society.
