Social Movements play a pivotal role in enhancing not only the processes of change through collective action, but also give direction to social transformation. The nature, scope and frequency of social movements may vary from time to time and society to society. The understanding of such movements is important not only for those who are dissatisfied with the present social and political order but also for those who are satisfied with it, to understand the fragility of political institutions and their future. This work also reasserts class in political analysis because it takes into account different dimensions of social life, even though class movements have been overtaken by new social movements based on caste, gender, ethnicity and environment.
