The Spanish conquest of Luzon began in the shores of what now comprised the province of Sorsogon. The name Ybalon which then referred to a small village along Sorsogon Bay, and then applied to the rest of southern portion of Bikol peninsula, was among the earliest mentioned in the chronicles written during the early stage of the Spanish conquest. This book, which neither pretends to provide the definitive history of Sorsogon nor claims to blaze an original scholarly trail, nevertheless, takes pride in being the first to synthesize available materials to produce a panoramic view of the two historic towns (Bacon and Sorsogon) now fused into a single geo-administrative unit, the city of Sorsogon.
