Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, a leading Japanese educationist, formulated a value-creating pedagogy in the 1930s. Following in Makiguchi’s footsteps, Daisaku Ikeda founded Soka University and Soka Schools five decades ago – “Soka” being the Japanese word for value-creation. The idea was to place moral values at the centre of an educational curriculum. In Kenya we have made feeble attempts at injecting these values in the form of life skills into our syllabuses. This book, in part sponsored by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, argues for a more concerted and more deliberate effort at incorporating moral values in our educational system.
