Have you ever experienced so much pain that death seemed a welcome relief? Have you ever envied an animal just because it was free from physical pain? This 88 year old man spent close to five years in a hospital bed and has lived with one lung since 1959, showing that being critically ill does not necessarily mean that you will die or live a short life. In spite of this illness, a strong will to succeed and hard work got him top Alliance High School and later to Makerere University. His student days and part of his working days were punctuated with long periods of hospitalization but he finally got healed. Later he was offered a job by the then East African Community, rising to become the organisation’s Chief Artist. In the course of his work, he had the privilege of meeting the notables, including the late President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, the late President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and the late President Milton Obote of Uganda. Macua’s story is sure to raise one’s faith in God and make him or her appreciate every day the Creators give them.
