In this autobiography, Dr Oburu Oginga has recounted the period of his birth in Maseno along the Equator in Kenya to his recent times as a politician and senior citizen. The story of Dr Oburu chronicles partly the history of the Odinga family, Kisumu City and colonial Nairobi. This book is an ethnographical documentation of key historical events that shaped and influenced his life. Dr Oburu narrates how he surmounted challenges to prove how resilience pays and that the world is not for the faint hearted. His encounter with adversity began when Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, is whose shadow he learnt a lot endured and triumphed against all kinds of humiliation in pre-colonial and post-modern Kenya. As Jaramogi’s eldest son, Oburu found himself thrown into the deep end of life at age sixteen. The family had to stand firm against betrayal, discrimination, uncertainty and blackmail from those around them. He endured racism and brutality of colonial environment back home and the unforgiving cold Moscow winter in the Soviet Union where he went to study I 962. Thanks to his father, he learnt early how to make tough decisions and fight for his space in challenging and sometimes messy political, social and economic situations.
