Momanyi, an orphaned form three student, falls head-over-heels in love with Kemunto, a beautiful primary school drop-out, and a daughter of a witchcraft-practicing woman. Kemunto’s parents want her to urgently get married to a particular man, whom she doesn’t love, but she wants Momanyi whose sister opposes the marriage on account of Kemunto’s despicable family. The two lovebirds decide to elope which endangers them and results in a murder and changed vocations as every character carries not his or her own cross but someone else’s. Leo uses the Gusii tribal beliefs, suspense, tension and courtroom action and its consequences, to weave a story that captures the reader’s attention throughout.
