Across the Pacific: Art and the Manila Galleons explores the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade, which connected Asia to the Americas from 1565 to 1815. Fourteen essays by leading international scholars examine different aspects of the trade, from the impact of New World silver on the global economy to how Christianity influenced the production of new art forms in Asia and Mexico. Many of the objects featured are cross-cultural, serving as tangible manifestations of the centuries-old exchange of people, ideas, materials, and techniques between continents. This publication accompanies the exhibition Manila Galleon: From Asia to the Americas, held at the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore, from 16 November 2023 to 17 March 2024.
