Afrikaans historical novel set in the Overberg in the early 1800s. After the death of her youngest son, Sophia Truter leaves the Cape and her husband, a judge, to return to farming. As she begins to find her feet and befriend her vryloper neighbours, a man's body is found on a mountain path and field cornet Jan Tesselaar has to track down the culprit.
